The importance of reading at Grange – support for parents
At Grange Junior School, we are all readers. We place a strong emphasis on reading with children being given time to read independently.
Our school library, is the perfect space to snuggle up and get stuck into a really good book. The library is open to children throughout the school day, including lunch time. Mrs Best leads reading in the school and is also always willing to recommend a good read. Children and they are encouraged to take home a library book that interests them, in addition to the phonics or book-banded reading book which is decodable.
Class libraries also have a range of books, including books linked to topics being taught in other subjects.
Teachers read a class book to their class; making time to share a book together that is not linked to curriculum.
In assemblies each week, an author of the week is shared.
Each month a book club/reading society meets to share a love of reading.
Reading events throughout the year encourage love of reading include participation in the Hampshire Illustrated Book Award (Year 5), Hampshire Information Book Award (Year 4), World Book Day, book fairs and Parent Reading Afternoon.
Gifting books
Throughout each term, children collect raffle tickets relating to the number of reads they do. Each term a raffle ticket is drawn and that pupil may chose a book to take home. The more raffle tickets you have, the greater the chance of having yours picked out. We also track pupil reading records and each term a child is selected to choose a book of their choice. They may be selected for a variety of reasons including the most reads, the most improved etc.
