Spelling
At Grange, we recognise the importence of the children becomeing good spelers. We also recognise the dificultys that peple can have whith speling.
Already, in the first two sentences of this page, there are 7 mistakes! Have you spotted them? And do you know why they are wrong and how to correct them?
On entry to Grange many children are not working at an age expected level for spelling. Pupils are using resources, including the phonics grapheme chart to assist with their spelling. Starters are revising phonic patterns and children use sound buttons across all year groups. Alongside segmenting words into sounds to learn words, a number of common exception words will also be taught.
At Grange we follow the Twinkl spelling scheme. Twinkl Spelling covers all of the statutory exception words and spelling rules from the National Curriculum. Across the school, practical spelling activities focus on spelling patterns, which is crucial for closing the gaps for our children. Phonics and spelling patterns/sounds are linked where possible during spelling/literacy lessons. A spelling diagnostic test, alongside teacher assessments, have helped plan the appropriate coverage for the class. Dictation and spelling games have proved successful in terms of both assessment outcomes and pupil enjoyment.
What is most important is that the children see themselves as spellers, and that they develop the confidence and the skills to tackle words – and to have a go at spelling them with accuracy. What they also need to do is to be able to recognise when words aren’t spelt correctly, and to have the skills, e.g. dictionary skills, to be able to correct them.
We don’t want to teach the children how to learn their spellings; we want to teach them how to spell instead.
You can find the spelling lists from the National curriculum by clicking here.
We have broken down the statutory spellings into terms and, on a termly basis, will test the children on these spellings. You can find out which words we will test during which term by clicking here.
